Destination Guide for Medical Students
A medical internship in Zanzibar, Tanzania combines clinical education with life on one of East Africa’s most distinctive island destinations. Located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar is known for its tropical coastline, historic towns and multicultural heritage. Therefore, students can combine their clinical placement with a broader international and cultural experience.
MedoPolo students complete their clinical placement in Nungwi in northern Zanzibar. While the medical internship remains the main purpose of the stay, the island also offers numerous opportunities to explore Zanzibar during free time and on weekends.

Why Choose Zanzibar for a Medical Internship?
Zanzibar offers an unusual combination of clinical learning, cultural immersion and tropical island life. In addition, students experience healthcare in a setting that differs from their home institutions while living in one of Tanzania’s most internationally known destinations.
- Tropical island destination in the Indian Ocean
- Medical internship and clinical placement in Nungwi
- English widely used in healthcare and tourism
- Rich African, Arab, Indian and European cultural influences
- White-sand beaches and a warm tropical climate
- Diving and snorkeling opportunities
- Historic towns, local culture and natural attractions
Student Life in Nungwi, Zanzibar
Nungwi is located in the north of Zanzibar and is the base for the MedoPolo clinical program at Real Care Hospital. Consequently, students can live close to their clinical placement while also experiencing one of Zanzibar’s best-known coastal areas.
Accommodation arranged through the partner hospital is available approximately 300 metres from Real Care Hospital. Depending on the selected option, facilities may include furnished rooms, Wi-Fi, kitchen facilities, bed linen, towels, washing facilities, air conditioning and breakfast.
Alternatively, students may choose independent guesthouses or apartments. As a result, different accommodation styles can be considered depending on personal preferences and availability.
Explore Zanzibar During Your Medical Elective
Outside the hospital, Zanzibar offers much more than a beach destination. The archipelago combines Swahili culture, historic trading towns, tropical landscapes and a diverse marine environment. Therefore, weekends and free days provide medical students with numerous opportunities to explore the island beyond their clinical placement in Nungwi.
Stone Town: Zanzibar’s UNESCO World Heritage Site

Stone Town forms the historic heart of Zanzibar City and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. It is an outstanding example of an East African Swahili trading town and reflects centuries of maritime exchange between Africa and Asia. Its narrow streets, historic buildings and distinctive urban landscape show the influence of African, Arab, Indian and European cultures. For students staying in Zanzibar, Stone Town therefore provides an opportunity to experience an important part of the island’s history and multicultural heritage.

Nungwi and Kendwa Beaches
Nungwi and nearby Kendwa are among the best-known coastal areas in northern Zanzibar. Their beaches and Indian Ocean setting make the northern coast particularly attractive for students staying in Nungwi.
Since the MedoPolo clinical placement is based directly in Nungwi, students can experience the northern coast without having to plan a separate weekend trip. In addition, swimming, snorkeling, diving and other marine activities are available in this part of Zanzibar.
Mnemba Atoll and Marine Life

The waters around Mnemba are one of Zanzibar’s well-known areas for snorkeling and scuba diving. Coral reefs and tropical marine life make the area a popular destination for boat and diving excursions from northern and northeastern Zanzibar.
However, Mnemba Island itself is privately managed. Visitor excursions generally focus on snorkeling, diving and boat activities in the surrounding marine environment rather than access to the island itself.

Spice Farms and Zanzibar’s Spice Heritage
Zanzibar is closely associated with the cultivation and historic trade of spices. Guided spice-farm visits introduce visitors to crops such as cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, ginger and cardamom while providing insight into their cultivation and traditional uses.
For international medical students, a spice tour offers an accessible way to discover another aspect of Zanzibar’s economic and cultural history beyond the hospital environment.
Jozani Forest and Zanzibar’s Wildlife
Jozani Forest offers a very different side of Zanzibar. The forest landscape is particularly associated with the Zanzibar red colobus, a primate found naturally only in the Zanzibar archipelago. In addition, a visit provides an opportunity to experience tropical vegetation and wildlife away from the island’s coastal areas.
Sunset Dhow Cruises
Traditional wooden dhows remain a characteristic sight along the Zanzibar coast. Sunset cruises are offered in several coastal areas and provide another way to experience the Indian Ocean after clinical activities or during a free evening.

Culture and Language in Zanzibar
Zanzibar’s identity has developed through centuries of maritime trade and cultural exchange across the Indian Ocean. Swahili traditions are central to everyday life, while African, Arab, Indian and European influences remain visible in architecture, food, language and local customs.
Swahili is the main local language. However, English is widely used in healthcare and tourism. At Real Care Hospital, both English and Swahili are used, and English is accepted for international medical students. Therefore, students can complete their clinical placement in English while also encountering Swahili in everyday life.
Climate and Best Time to Visit Zanzibar
Zanzibar has a tropical climate and remains warm throughout the year. Temperatures commonly range between approximately 25 and 32°C. Consequently, lightweight clothing and preparation for warm and humid conditions are useful during everyday life on the island.
The period from approximately June to October generally falls within Zanzibar’s main dry season and is particularly attractive for outdoor activities, beach visits and island exploration. Nevertheless, medical placements can take place at other times of the year as well, depending on program availability and individual travel plans.
Getting Around Zanzibar
Students have several options for travelling around Zanzibar during their free time. Taxis and private transfers are convenient for longer trips, while rental cars can provide additional flexibility for independent travel.
Local shared minibuses, commonly known as dala-dalas, are another form of transportation used on Zanzibar. They offer a more local and inexpensive way to travel, although journey times and comfort can differ considerably from private transport. Therefore, students should choose transportation according to the distance, timing and type of excursion planned.
Combining Clinical Education and Island Life
A medical placement in Zanzibar offers more than clinical training alone. During the week, students can gain experience in a different healthcare environment. At the same time, living on the island creates opportunities to learn about Swahili culture, explore historic places and experience Zanzibar’s natural environment.
At MedoPolo’s partner institution, Real Care Hospital in Nungwi, international students can participate in supervised clinical activities across several medical departments. Meanwhile, the location in northern Zanzibar provides direct access to the coast and allows weekend trips to other parts of the island.
This combination makes Zanzibar particularly suitable for students who want their international medical elective to combine clinical education, intercultural learning and independent travel within one destination.
