Under current regulations, travelers from 40 designated countries are eligible for a 30-day tourist visa completely free of charge, which permits a double-entry facility. - Local Currency & Customs: The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). - Identification & Checkpoints: The local police and military maintain routine checkpoints throughout various provinces. You are required by law to carry official identification, such as your passport, with you at all times.
- Religious Customs & Statutes: Respect for religious traditions is paramount. Posing for a photograph with your back facing a Buddha statue is a serious legal offense in Sri Lanka that can result in arrest or heavy fines. Additionally, any visible religious tattoos (especially of the Buddha) or clothing featuring religious icons must be fully covered in public spaces.
- Photography Restrictions: It is strictly illegal to take photographs of military installations, government buildings, and certain high-security zones. These restrictions are not always clearly marked, so always verify with locals before shooting.
- Health Precautions: Protect yourself against mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue and chikungunya by applying effective insect repellent regularly and wearing loose, light-colored long clothing. Stick exclusively to bottled or purified water, and ensure food is thoroughly cooked.
