Education at FMB Hospital

The Faculty of Medicine Botucatu (FMB), an institution within UNESP university, is active in the education of not only national, but also international students. The medical study towards graduation aims not only at the theoretical education of the medical students, but also is designed to the students practical contact with the most prevalent diseases of the population. In this sense, the study program fosters the life-long learning of medical knowledge as well as the ethical and humanistic development of its students and the commitment to their country. From the very beginning of their studies, the medical students are incorporated into performing professional activities in the local health care and at their residencies. With the progression of their studies, the students begin their work in the primary health care providers of the region, in specialized outpatient ambulances, the hospitals, mental health institutions as well as in the emergency rooms of the region.

Location:

Our university hospital is located in the state of Sao Paolo, approximately 225 Km from the capital of São Paulo. There is convenient transportation from any major airport in the vicinity (e.g. Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) in São Paulo) by bus available. The trip will take about 3 1/2 hours.

Hospital Facts:

FMB University Hospital Campus includes a total area of 70,000 m2. The hospital serves as most comprehensive medical institution in the area most medical treatments of the surrounding population. To achieve this, FMB is offering a total of 417 hospital-beds and 52 beds for Intensice Care. It features a total of 18 surgical rooms open for planned and emergency procedures of all branches. Other facilities include 198 medical offices, 31 specialized treatment facilities, as well as 3 obstetric rooms.

Annually, the hospital schedules more than 420.000 medical appointments and receives about 25.000 in-house patients. The surgery department performs more than 12.000 surgeries per year. Other treatments include roughly 21.000 hemodialysis sessions, 14.000 chemotherapy treatments, as well as 24.000 radiotherapy sessions each year.

Student Education:

The FMB UNESP university hospital offers medical students about 90 placements/year and has more than 560 domestic students enrolled continuously.
The training of the UNESP medical students is divided into 3 different cycles:
– Basic Study — 1st and 2nd years

– Professionalizing Study — 3rd and 4th years

– Clinical Internship — 5th and 6th years 

The Campus of Botucatu Medical School also receives and sends students for Post-doctoral and Doctoral studies. The hospital has great experience with hosting foreign final year and Famulatur students and participates in several exchange programs with foreign universities, as for example with the Ludwigs-Maximilians University (LMU) of Munich, Germany.

FMB History:

Renowned as a Brazilian and international standard of teaching, research and extension services, Botucatu Medical School offers undergraduate programs in Medicine and Nursing, 39 medical residency programs, 52 professional development programs, and 10 stricto sensu graduate programs. Undergraduate studies include Medicine (90 places a year) and Nursing (30 places a year), gathering 775 graduate students, and over 500 teaching and technical staff.The School of Medicine of Botucatu (FMB), of Unesp, is prominent both on the national and international level in all the activities it develops, in both courses it offers. The course of Medicine aims at the solid graduation, which privileges the contact and the educational actions, as well as meeting the health problems most prevalent in the population, the permanent pursuit of knowledge, the ethical and humanistic posture, and the commitment with the citizenship. The course of Nursing has as its goal to have generalist, humanist professionals graduated, with a critical sense and conscious of their role in the society, who exercise their attributions with competence, meeting the health social needs of individuals, families and communities, with an emphasis in the Unified Health System (SUS), assuring the entirety of attention, the quality and the humanization of the assistance provided.

Since the beginning of the course, the students take part of professional activities performed, initially, in residences, schools and work places of the SUS’ users. Gradually, they start to work in the primary health care network, in outpatient clinics of specialties, general and specialized hospitals, mental health services and emergency rooms of the municipality of Botucatu and region.
